In order to improve the standard of technical education in India, AICTE is planning to shut down about 800 engineering colleges in the nation. Low admission in these colleges is another reason that AICTE is planning to close these colleges.

As of now, these colleges have been asked by the AICTE to submit a report by the second week of the September.

These colleges have less than 30% admission rate and have been given the option either to shut themselves down or to merge with the nearby college.
The decision to shut down these colleges was taken after studying the admission rate of these colleges over the past five years across the country. The list of these colleges has not been made public yet and the change will be effective from next academic year 2018-19.

According to the AICTE official it is one of the many efforts being made the authority to improve the standard of the engineering education in the nation.
