On Thursday, University Grants Commission (UGC) asked the universities to send the proposals to set up a chair named after Swami Dayanand Saraswati in their institutions. Swami Dayanand Saraswati was a social reformer.
“The UGC has been implementing a scheme Establishment of Chairs in the name of illustrious persons in the universities,” a communique from the commission read.
The Chairs approved by the commission on the area ‘ social reformer or social awakening’ is named after Swami Dayanand Saraswati.
The universities which are interested in establishing the said chair are required to write to UGC within 15 days along with detailed proposal to the to the secretary of the commission.
Dayanand Saraswati was an ascetic, who opposed the ritualistic worship in Hindu religion and insisted on ancient Vedic traditions.
