A day after the BJP unleashed saffron mascot Yogi Adityanath’s popularity to win over voters in chief minister Virbhadra Singh’s constituency of Arki, party president Amit Shah will campaign in the politically significant Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.

He will be campaigning in Dalhousie and Jawali assembly segments of Kangra district, which sends 15 legislators to the 68-member House, on Monday afternoon. Shah will addressing three rallies in Kangra district over the next five days.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also bolster the BJP campaign in the hill state on November 2 with three rallies at Rehan, Rait and Palampur in Kangra district.

Why Kangra?

Population-wise, Kangra is the biggest district of Himachal Pradesh and holds the key to power in the state. Whichever party wins the maximum number in Kangra forms the government in the state. In 2012, when the Congress failed to do well in other districts, the party won 10 seats in Kangra and eventually formed the government.

In 2007, the BJP won nine seats in Kangra and formed the government. Kangra had 16 assembly segments before delimitation.
