Delhi police is all set to being the project ‘Student Police Cadet’ in the schools of national capital. The directive regarding the same was issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs in June in which it asked to implement the program across all the schools of all states.

The program is aimed at ‘ training youth to contribute towards building a constructive society at the school level ‘ and will teach the students about the law and the issues related to substance abuse.

According to the sources, the Delhi police has chalked out all the modalities of the program and if all goes well, the program will be launched in schools from the beginning of the next academic year.

Source further said that the team led by the DCP rank officers conducted a detailed study of the similar programs in the states of Kerala and Karnataka.

“This was first adopted by the Kerala Police in collaboration with the state’s education department in August 2010. We will work with the Delhi education department along similar lines,” an official said.

Under the project, the official said, police will train students to “respect the law, practice discipline and civic sense, and develop empathy towards vulnerable sections of society”.

“The training will also strengthen the student’s commitment towards family, community and the environment. It will also help them resist negative tendencies such as substance abuse, deviant behavior and intolerance,” he added.

Special Commissioner of Police Sanjay Beniwal said that there is a need to sensitize students from the start. ‘They face many problems such as drug abuse and child abuse. During our skill development program, which we started in low-profile localities, we sensitized youths below 18 years. Such an initiative in schools will bear better results.’
