The special task force (STF) of the Madhya Pradesh Police arrested two men from Datia district on Wednesday for their alleged involvement in smuggling historical Indian artifacts to foreign countries.
Investigators have confiscated two idols and a painting from their possession.
The suspects have been identified as Praveen Agrawal, 40 and Rajendra Rajput, 41, residents of Jhansi. Both men have been charged under the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972.
The duo was produced before a special court in Bhopal for police remand.
“One of the painting is dates back to 1931. Experts are being summoned for a detailed examination of these idols and paintings,” said an officer privy of the investigations.
The accused have said that they were in contact with people in Khajurahu too, said sources.
