Mumbai Records 210 mm Rainfall in 24 Hours, Moderate Showers to Continue

Mumbai city recorded 210 mm of rainfall in last 24 hours, that started on Tuesday afternoon, lashing many parts of the city. The MeT department said that the suburb recorded 303 mm and Dahanu near Mumbai recorded 304 mm of rainfall till 8:30 AM on Wednesday morning. The Met department said that the situation is likely to improve hereon and rains may slow down. While the heavy rain alert has been removed, light  to moderate showers are likely to continue in different parts of Mumbai.

“Now rainfall will decrease, but light to moderate rainfall to continue in Mumbai region. We have removed warning (for heavy rainfall), intermittent rainfall likely over city & suburbs for next 48 hrs,” said Ajay Kumar, Scientist, IMD.

IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 225.3 mm of rainfall from 8.30 AM to 11.30 PM on Tuesday. Nariman Point recorded a rainfall of 88 mm. The rainfall in other parts of the city, recorded at BMC’s automatic weather stations, was 110 mm rain in Worli, Chembur – 112 mm, Mulund – 94 mm, Andheri – 208 mm, Bandra – 128 mm and Borivali – 204 mm.

Mumbai has been receiving incessant rainfall since Tuesday afternoon. The rains continued in many areas till Wednesday, leading to water logging and traffic snarls. The Mumbai local was also facing delays, especially on the Central and Harbour lines. Many flights were cancelled, diverted or delayed due to heavy rains and low visibility at Mumbai airport.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday had issued warning of possible heavy rainfall across the city. “As per information from the Colaba observatory, the north Konkan region of Maharashtra, including Mumbai and its neighbouring areas, will receive continuous rainfall. It is likely that some areas will receive very heavy rainfall,” the statement read.

Weather.com has predicted that this rainfall might continue at least until September 25. The temperature will remain at an average of 30 degree Celsius, it said.

The Meteorological Department predicted that the rains will continue for next five days. It had, on September 17, issued warnings of heavy rainfall in Mumbai and the coastal Konkan region in three days. The department had said that Konkan and Goa are expected to receive heavy rain at isolated places for 72 hours.

Mumbai had received rainfall of 331 mm on August 29. The rains had paralysed normal life in the city leaving people stuck in their offices. At least 20 people had died during the August 29 rains.
