Former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Sunday said Tamil Nadu Assembly had 233 members and Governor C.H. Vidyasagar Rao should not allow time to artificially alter the strength of the House.

He has tweeted: “AIADMK politics is low comedy turning into farce. Where is the Governor?”

“Tamil Nadu is heading for a situation similar to what happened in Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand,” Mr. Chidambaram told The Hindu.

In Uttarakhand, nine Congress MLAs, along with 27 BJP legislators, met Governor K. K. Paul at the Raj Bhavan in Dehradun, and sought dismissal of the Congress government and the Speaker disqualified the nine MLAs.

‘Challenge ruling in court’

Asked whether Speaker P. Dhanapal would disqualify the DMK MLAs in the gutkha case, Mr. Chidambaram said he would not if he was independent and followed the rules.

To another question whether the Speaker could take action against the 19 AIADMK MLAs who had written to the Governor withdrawing their support to Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami since a whip could not be issued for their actions outside the House, Mr. Chidambaram said that if they are disqualified, nothing could be done.

“The only option is to challenge the Speaker’s ruling in the court,” he said.

It may be recalled that in 1987, 10 DMK MLAs including party general secretary K. Anbazhagan were disqualified for burning the Constitution.
