BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh government is facing a tough challenge to pacify the agitating employees of panchayat and rural development department, electricity companies, gram sahayak, adhyapak sangh and other unions ahead of the PM’s visit to the state next month.

These employees were entrusted the task of monitoring welfare programmes like ‘Gramoday Se Bharat Uday’, facilitating power supply during harvest season, Narmada Sewa Yatra and preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Amarkantak during the culmination of the campaign next month. To cope with the situation, the government has warned of strict action against the agitating employees and instructed them to take up the welfare programmes on priority. The government has also increased the salary of employment assistants (Rozgar Sahayaks) who have been extending their cooperation in fulfilling the tasks. However, the government is keen to complete some of the ambitious projects like Gramoday in which the officials are receiving a large number of applications related to welfare schemes and personal grievances. Rural development, health, agriculture, SCs-STs welfare and revenue departments are playing a major role in rural areas to redress the complaints.

The government has also given targets to the departments to complete the task by June 30. Also, other projects under Swachchta Abhiyan, Housing for All and ODF initiatives were to be taken up within a stipulated period of time. After discussion with state panchayat and rural development minister Gopal Bhargava and PWD minister Rampal Singh, some employees’ groups have called off their strike to resume work till May 15, but the work is yet to be completed, said sources in the panchayat department.

“Employee unions were up in arms, seeking wage revision and other facilities. We have pacified them and assured to consider their demand along with the requests made by other employee unions. But, at present we have no pendency, as employment assistants have taken up the job,” panchayat minister Gopal Bhargava said.

Sources in Mantralaya said panchayat and rural development department has also issued instructions to deduct the salary of employees who have not resumed work. As more than 10 employee unions have threatened to strike work, if their wages are not increased, the government is in dilemma whether to act strictly or pacify them to ensure smooth working till Modi’s visit on May 15. Though chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has hinted towards acting tough against agitating employees, instructions have also been issued to make alternative arrangements to make the Prime Minister’s Amarkantak visit successful on May 15.
