- Former Union Minister and Vice Chairman Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti Vijay Goel today welcomed United States Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in Gandhi Smriti and presented him with the autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi and a Gandhi Charkha. Goel also led Chuck Schumer to pay tributes at the Martyr’s Column, the site of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination.
During their interaction, Chuck Schumer said that his father Abe Schumer had met Mahatma Gandhi in Calcutta. He informed that during World War II when his father, as a navigator was flying over the Himalayas located in Burma, he stopped at Calcutta where he had met Mahatma Gandhi and exchanged greetings to him.
Vijay Goel and Senator Schumer shared memories of their political career during this visit and briefed him about the history of Mahatma Gandhi’s stay in the erstwhile Birla House,
Goyal also said how the India-US ties have strengthened under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Schumer while calling Mahatma Gandhi, “A great man of humanity”, wrote: “A beautiful memorial in memory of a beautiful man – who still today does great influence in the world for peace, love and unity”.
Other Senators Maria Cantwell, Catherine Cortez Masto, Amy Klobuchar, Gary Peters, Jack Reed, Mark Warner, Peter Welch and Ron Wyden along with their spouses also visited Gandhi Smriti and offered tributes to Mahatma Gandhi
