The Calcutta High Court has rapped the Mamata government over the Durga immersion rules, saying that it can’t restrict way society follows rituals.
As per its observation, the court has asked can’t two communities celebrate their respective religious functions together. It asked as to when the state government are firm there is no communal harmony in the state, why is the state creating communal distinction between the two. .
Earlier on 23 August, the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the visarjan ceremony or durga idol immersion of this year’s durga puja will not be permitted for a 24-hour period on the day of Muharram. Banerjee ordered that there would be no idol immersion on Muharram day.
Announcing this in an official meet with durga puja organisers in Kolkata, she said that no idol immersion after 6 PM on Dashami, 30 September due to Muharram processions. Later, Banerjee on her official twitter account cleared her statement, saying that immersion will resume on and from October 2.
