MUMBAI: Priyanka Chopra’s debut Hollywood film Baywatch is sinking faster than Titanic. The film, which also stars Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, could only manage Rs 3.5 crore in its first two days of release in India.
According to Box Office India, the film made Rs 1.7 crore on Satruday, which is only a little over what it made on opening day, including Thursday previews. The report predicts the film won’t crack Rs 5 crore in its opening weekend, owing to the India-Pakistan cricket match.
On Friday, Wonder Woman, the fifth film in the DC Extended Universe, made Rs 2.5 crore. Baywatch, which has similarly underperformed at the US box office, made Rs 1.5 crore.
Combined with negative reviews (it sits at 20% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes) and the lack of a strong marketing campaign, Baywatch suffered a fate similar to its disappointing debut in the States, where it scored one of the lowest openings of star Dwayne Johnson’s career, and contributed to the worst Memorial Day weekend in nearly 20 years.
Wonder Woman, meanwhile, is over performing. Thanks to strong reviews (93% on Rotten Tomatoes), and positive buzz, the film is projected to make approximately $100 million in the US. The film made Rs 3.25 crore on its second day in India pushing its two day total to Rs 5.75 crore.
