Men’s fashion is grabbing eyeballs with each season. Colours, cuts, prints… you name it and men just can’t wait to get more. Suits are quite the fashion eye-catcher to look impressive. The latest trend of looser suits is making the round these days and is especially known to work for those on a broader side.
Adding to your persona
Designer and stylist Sukriti Grover calls the year as a golden one for men’s suits. “The days of black suits, shirt and tie are dead; you can now afford to get lazy with your choices. A suit can make a man look superior; it adds so much splendour to a dashing personality.”
Celebrity stylist Eshaa Amiin with actresses Karishma Kapoor and Sridevi as clients, adds, “Suits add a lot to a man’s personality and make them look sharp and dapper. It oozes power and masculinity.”
In stylist Aastha Sharma’s words, suits are man’s best friend and best answer for any occasion. “Menswear is often built around rigid rules and strict codes. I feel even today we are not open to men’s doing a lot of experiment with the silhouettes. But a man in a suit is ‘the man’. With the changing trend in men’s fashion, I feel suit is a staple. For any occasion, a suit can never go wrong. It makes a man look classic and gorgeous. For a formal event, I think a clean-cut suit and a bow tie makes a man look handsome. Suits compliment a man’s body. I find a man in a plain round neck t-shirt and a classic suit chic. For a casual event a t-shirt, loafer and suit looks perfect to me.”
Flow with the trend
But are loose suits trend perfect for broader men? Is it really trending? Eshaa thinks tight fits have gone out. “A relaxed vibe is taking over men’s clothing. Those with broader shoulder should still get a made-to-measure fit to compliment your shoulder.”
Going a little further, Aastha reminds us that this trend was popular in the 80s and 90s. Remember Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan’s styles? “And in my perception, it is really cool. The comeback of loose suits has a vivid impact on men’s fashion. I think it’s perfectly fine for a person with broad cuts to wear a loose fit as it itself creates a vision of an imperfect body. Go slouchy this season!” she adds.
Sukriti too thinks on the Eshaa’s line and includes, “Breezier suits with fluid fits are gaining ground and are definitely a better pick for men with broader shoulders.”
Wear it in style
Wearing such suits can be a tricky affair. Aastha hints that loose suits ‘suit’ any occasion. “I am currently hankering on pin tuck pants and loose fit blazers from 90s, rather than the rockers or preppies of 50s. Loose fit worn with a clean cut shoe is a master combination. A loose fit linen suit in blue or grey with a short white shirt, not tucked in with a hat and corduroy shoes to me is an amazing set. Pairing a loose pair with the same colour shoe is classic. Loose pants and ankle length is a great combination. Pair it up with a loose fit blazer and slim fit shit to rock!”
Sukriti feels loose or relaxed silhouettes never do slack on style. “Wear them with contrasting colours like burgundy with Aqua. One can wear with high waist trousers coolly unfussy and neatly polished.”
Eshaa suggests that one should not go too tight or too loose with regards suits. “Adding cardigan or sweater underneath is a great way to add warmth and texture. Add accessories like lapel pins, pocket square, etc.”
Add-on
If men follow correctly, accessories would be an addition. Eshaa recommends neckties, cufflinks, pocket square and a dress watch. Sukriti suggests, “It’s often said you can judge a man’s character by his shoes and that’s never truer than when he wears a suit. A black suit always goes with black shoes and a grey one with either black or brown. However, to add to the casualness, loose suits in casual and chic space go well with trainers as well, depending on the occasion.”
Aastha finds accessorising men as being quite the task and an exciting process. “A bright pocket square and a silk scarf look extraordinary with the loose fit. Slip-on convertible shoes make the look classic plus so in trend. Wear a pair of English loafers and you are good to go. Briefcase bags are the master of loose fit suit accessory. For a casual day, a nice hat, a pair of sunglasses and flat sole sneakers is a win-win. A textured bow tie and crocodile texture shoes would complement the fit for a formal evening.”
Sukriti has found loose suits designed by Louis Vuitton and fashion house Lanvin quite attractive. “Fendi’s dark suits convey easy elegance.” Aastha sees Troy Costa in the 90s vibe this season. “Raf Simons is doing a lot of loose fit jackets and long coats.” Eshaa adds the names of Ermenegildo Zegna, Ferragamo and Boglioli to the list.
Keep in mind
Aastha finds loose fits tricky. “I consider a good attitude more than a good body to be a must. Loose suits shouldn’t be done with a bulky pair of shoe. Too much accessorising can turn out to be really bad. Huge bags are a straight NO! The bottom should be low cut and not too baggy.”
Sukriti suggests, “From fabric to the colour, everything plays a part even in loose suit. The trick is to look slick. While wearing them, one has to take care of the shoulders. The shoulder seam should be at the corner of the shoulder. The shoulder should be smooth and shouldn’t have and indent below the seam.”
