UGC directed about 123 ‘deemed-to-be-universities’ from using the word ‘university’ in their institute’s name and said that institutes who will fail to follow the directive will face strict action. The directive was issued by the UGC on the orders of the Supreme Court.

Earlier, the regulator body also nullified all the online BTech degrees which were awarded to the students between 2001 and 2005 through distance education.

The Supreme court heard in a case that several deemed to be universities were already calling them the university and ordered the UGC to contain the issue and prevent it from happening any further.

“The institutions are hereby directed to restrain from using the word ‘university’ with its name, failing which necessary action would be initiated in accordance with the UGC (institutions deemed-to-be- universities) Regulations, 2016. Instead, the Institution may mention the word ‘Deemed to be University’ within parenthesis,” said the UGC in Fridayʼs directive.

Some institutes which will be affected by the directive are:

Lingayaʼs University
Manav Rachna University
Jain University
Christʼs University
Symbiosis International University

“Such deemed-to-be-universities can also apply for an alternative name with the HRD Ministry,” said PK Thakur, UGC secretary.

These universities will be forced to remove the word ‘university’ from their names
